The Master of Arts (MA) in International Law aims to equip a new cohort of legal experts and academics with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate and address pressing international legal challenges. This initiative meets a growing need for professionals adept in matters such as diplomacy, human rights protection, armed conflict, international criminal justice, environmental law, refugee rights, and international institutional governance.

International law serves as the foundation for legal interactions among states, international entities, non-state actors, and individuals. This programme delivers a broad and in-depth curriculum covering key disciplines, including public international law, human rights law, humanitarian law, international criminal law, refugee and asylum law, law of the sea, treaty law, peace and conflict studies, environmental law, and the jurisdiction of international courts and tribunals. The programme also examines Iraq’s legal commitments on the international stage, with particular attention to the status of minority and stateless populations

Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate Degree: Completion of a recognised university undergraduate degree, at least to Bachelor level with Honours (or equivalent), in a relevant discipline.
  • Undergraduate Degree: Minimum undergraduate average of 60% (equalized transcript is required for students who have graduated from international institutions).
  • English Language Proficiency: Minimum English Language requirement is 50 in PTE – 6.0 in IELTS -74 in TOEFL iBT or 105 in Duolingo.
  • School Interview.
  • Reference: Two references which indicate capacity to undertake postgraduate studies, at least one of which will be from an academic who has taught the applicant.
  • Equalised transcript is required for students who have graduated from international institutions.
  • Note! Applicants dismissed for any reason from any university, school or college will not be considered.

  • Official Transcripts: Provide a copy of your undergraduate transcript with your application.
  • A copy of your passport and national ID.

Curriculum

The modules in this programme are structured across two academic semesters of taught coursework, followed by a year dedicated to independent research and dissertation writing.

Semester I introduces students to foundational and thematic areas of international law through the following modules:

  1. Law of Treaties and International Responsibilities
  2. Economic Migration and Labour Law
  3. International Human Rights Law
  4. Legal Research Methodology

Semester II builds upon this foundation by addressing more specialized and advanced topics, including:

  1. International Dispute Settlement
  2. International Environmental and Climate Change Law
  3. National and Transboundary Water Law
  4. World Trade Organization Law

Upon successful completion of all taught modules, students’ progress to the dissertation phase, which spans Semesters III and IV. During this period, students undertake a substantial piece of original research under academic supervision, allowing them to explore a specific area of international law in depth.
