UKH students of MSc Architecture presented redevelopment proposals for the preservation and conservation of the Haji Dawood mosque to the Governor of Erbil Omed Khoshnaw and his deputy, Masoud Karash.

The Haji Dawood Mosque is a historic landmark in Erbil’s bazaar dating back to 1797 AD. Our students, divided into five groups, each group proposed unique interventions, focusing on structural reinforcement, material conservation, improved ventilation and lighting, and sustainable design strategies.

Key considerations included restoring the mosque’s domes and arches, reintegrating original materials like limestone, brick, and wood, enhancing accessibility through the redevelopment of the ablution area, and improving outdoor spaces for worshippers’ comfort. The presentations, delivered at the Governorate, highlighted a collective effort to balance historic preservation with modern functionality, ensuring the mosque remains a cultural and spiritual pillar for future generations.

The Governor and his team warmly received our students and staff and underscored their commitment to support the proposals.
