Both institutions, represented by presidents Bill Rammell of UKH and Prof. Dr. Gesine Grande of BTU signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in which they declared the intention to develop and support cooperation between both institutions. This agreement is supported and funded by the joint DAAD project “German-Iraqi Academic Partnerships – Initiation 2022, Sustainability in the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (Susi UKH) VI”.

The MOU was finalized in October 2021. Soon after, a delegation of academics and students from BTU visited UKH and delivered workshops and lectures on quality management, project management, entrepreneurship and climate change to UKH students and staff. This was followed by a visit of UKH delegation to BTU in late November 2021 to attend seminars on reduction of carbon emissions which included a field visit to Open-pit coal mining site in Cottbus Nord near Cottbus, Lower Lusatia, Brandenburg, Germany. According to the signed MOU, UKH and BTU agree on general forms of cooperation in joint research and teaching activities in the fields of environmental sciences, climate change, environmental sustainability, sustainable sociotechnical transformation and entrepreneurship. The agreement also includes the exchange of information such as academic materials, academic publications, and information as well as staff and student mobility.

Both institutions aim to exchange undergraduate and graduate students and encourage their staff members to spend periods at the partner institution for teaching and research. As a part of the student exchange, UKH postgraduate student Dana Abdulkareem Hasan spent over two months in BTU for research and training and he was awarded the “Green Belt” in Six Sigma Quality Management Certificate.
