UKH Participates in the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2026)

Erbil, Kurdistan Region– 09 August 2026 – Dr. Bootan Rahman, a faculty member of the Mathematics Unit at the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH), proudly represented the University as the only participant from the Kurdistan Region and Iraq selected from more than 2,000 global applicants to attend the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2026).

Held from 22–30 July 2026 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, USA, the Congress is the world’s most prestigious gathering of mathematicians and the event at which the Fields Medal, widely regarded as the highest honour in mathematics, is awarded. Dr. Rahman’s participation was fully funded by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the Simons Foundation.

During the Congress, Dr. Rahman actively participated in roundtable discussions and scientific sessions exploring the latest developments in mathematics, with particular emphasis on the role of mathematics in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He also had the opportunity to engage with leading mathematicians from around the world, including current Fields Medalists and Professor Terence Tao, one of the world’s most distinguished mathematicians.

In addition to participating in the scientific programme, Dr. Rahman established valuable connections with international mathematical societies and academic institutions, creating opportunities for future collaboration in mathematics education, research, and academic exchange.
