Erbil, Iraq — 23 August 2026 – The School of Medicine at the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH), in collaboration with Zhini Tandrust, a student-led medical education initiative, organised and hosted The On-Call Doctor Symposium: From Presentation to Management, bringing together medical students, junior doctors, senior house officers, academic staff, and healthcare professionals to explore practical approaches to common and important clinical presentations encountered in emergency and acute care settings.
The event was held at the School of Medicine Campus Conference Hall and welcomed around 120 participants from different cities across Iraq, including medical students, junior doctors, and senior house officers.
The symposium featured five distinguished speakers from different medical specialties, who delivered scientific presentations addressing a range of important emergency and acute care topics.
The sessions included:
- Primary Trauma Care, presented by Dr. Solin Kawa, Emergency Medicine Specialist.
- Decoding Hyponatremia: A Step-by-Step Approach to Diagnosis and Management, presented by Dr. Awni Zebari, Internal Medicine Specialist.
- Approach to Elevated Creatinine Level in the Emergency Department, presented by Dr. Abdullah Muhammed Chalaby, Internal Medicine Specialist.
- Calming the Storm: Evidence-Based Approaches to the Agitated Patient, presented by Dr. Soran Ahmad, Emergency Medicine Specialist.
- Early Diagnosis of Aortic Dissection; Case Presentation with Fast-Track Review and Zheen Heart Department Presentation, presented by Dr. Mohammed Jabar, SHO in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.
The sessions focused on practical approaches to the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with acute and potentially life-threatening conditions. The diverse range of topics also highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary knowledge and effective clinical decision-making in emergency and on-call settings.
The symposium provided medical students and early-career healthcare professionals with an opportunity to learn directly from experienced specialists, engage with clinical cases, and strengthen their understanding of conditions commonly encountered in emergency departments and during on-call duties.
Through this collaboration, Zhini Tandrust and the School of Medicine at the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr continue to support student-led medical education and create opportunities for knowledge exchange between students, doctors, and healthcare professionals.
The event concluded with discussions and engagement among participants, reinforcing the importance of continuous medical education, collaboration, and evidence-based practice in improving patient care.
