Climate Change and its Impact on Melting Snow on Zagros Mountain in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

100%

This online Side Event is part of the program for the official launch of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation on 21 January 2025.

Climate change poses a significant threat to the Zagros Mountains, a critical water source for Iraq. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increasing frequency of extreme weather events are accelerating snowmelt and reducing snowpack in the region. This phenomenon has profound implications for water availability, agriculture, biodiversity, and local communities. Addressing this issue requires multidisciplinary collaboration and innovative solutions. This virtual workshop aims to bring together experts, policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the impacts of climate change on snow dynamics in the Zagros Mountains. The panel discussion will foster knowledge exchange, promote sustainable practices, and identify actionable strategies to mitigate these impacts and enhance regional resilience.
