On June 5th, 2018, the American Corner Erbil in collaboration with UKH, School of Science and Engineering, English Language Center and Art Holistic Student Support Center, held an event in conjunction with #WorldEnvironmentDay with the theme #BeatPlasticPollution. The event was organized to raise awareness and empower the participants to act and improve the quality of environment in Kurdistan. A few activities were lined up including exhibitions and demonstration of environmental projects from UKH students and staff as well as other environmental organizations. Concurrently there were presentations and panel discussions by the subject matter experts including Dr. Ali, Dr. Baroz, Dr. Joseph, Mr. Hawkar, Mr. Iftikhar from SSE at UKH, and Mr. Samad Muhammed, Head of Environmental Protection and Treatment Commission of KRG. The presentations focused on what is happening to our planet earth; Why environment, nature and planet are important; the environmental issues in Kurdistan, and the reasons for the pollution we are facing today; Why Beating Plastic Pollution is necessary? and what are the consequences of not doing so; How to beat plastic pollution following the slogan 'reduce, refuse, recycle, reuse and remove'. The highlights of the event were prize giving ceremony to seven deserving winners of UKH WED competition. The event was concluded with list of follow up items from the discussion. Over 50 participants attended the event.
