English Language Skills Building: Reading Club - Round 1

On Tuesday, June 13th 2017, the first Reading Club was presented by Edward Bassett, as part of a requested expansion of the D.E.A.R sessions. The Reading Club is a group activity in which the presenter introduces and leads a discussion on works of literature. Mr. Bassett used Anton Chekhov’s “The Lady and the Dog” as the basis from which he formed his presentation. He described the basic elements found in short stories, such as plot, setting, character, etc, and how readers can derive meaning from the words the author purposefully chooses in describing those elements. He asked that attendees read the short story in its entirety before the next reading club session, so that the attendees and the presenter could discuss it in detail.
