BA in English

Overview

     The Bachelor of Arts Program in English is set to officially commence in the Fall 2017. The notion of opening an English department at the University of Kurdistan-Hewlêr arose from the recognition that, whereas hundreds of students complete bachelor degrees in English departments, graduates typically do not exhibit the skills that degree holders in English should have acquired. In addition to the critical demand for these skills in Kurdistan’s labour market, graduates with a B.A. in English deserve to attain mastery in areas that a universal degree in English entails. This particularly includes the need for offering the core competencies that define what a B.A. in English is. In this regard, a programme that responds to both the demands of the local market and the requirements laid by reputable international bodies is rendered necessary. To meet the latter and among a range of international models, the standards set by the British Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education - B.A. in English were taken as the basis for both developing the programme modules as well as the final outcome indicators.

     Tailored as a comprehensive yet meticulous degree, the programme expects to attract students who want to be marketable across a broad range of employability areas in Kurdistan’s workforce, with an eye on gaining an exceptionally high level of English proficiency. Students will be challenged through a multidisciplinary four-year degree programme to acquire skills that give them a significant advantage in competing in today’s job market.

     Observing the general academic standards set by the British Quality Assurance Agency for a BA in English, the degree covers a wide range of interdisciplinary areas within English, including English literature and linguistics, teaching English as a foreign language, and translation. Therefore, the programme enables students to gain knowledge and skills in these domains. Moreover, the programmes provides sufficient opportunities for practical academic and professional tutoring whereby students choose one or more sub-areas (such as teaching, research or translation) and engage in on-the-job training through practicums and internships.

Structure

     The B.A. (Hons) programme in English is a 4-year integrated programme which covers a wide range of areas within the scientific discipline of English. It is a comprehensive programme covering these main areas: Linguistics, Literature, Translation and Interpretation, and Teaching English as a Foreign/Second language. In addition to taking a variety of modules in each of these areas, in their later stages in the programme, students will have the opportunity to take electives focusing on one or two specialized areas.

Modules

     Some modules offered in the programme include: Study and research skills, Critical thinking, Cross-cultural communication, Professional writing, English teaching methodologies, Journalistic translation, Linguistics, a number of sequential modules in English literature, Simultaneous interpreting, Global English, Error analysis, and Bilingualism. Moreover, students will be taking internships in teaching and interpreting in their final year of studies.

Skills Development

     The BA in English programme utilizes an unprecedented approach to developing key skills that will be of considerable importance across academic and professional landscapes, and which will also be crucial to the growth of individuals as independent life-long learners.

     The programme structure, content, and method of delivery provides a distinctive and much-needed degree option for students. Graduates will possess the disciplinary knowledge, cognitive and communication skills, and intellectual values needed for further academic achievement or success in a wide range of professions. Specifically, the programme prepares students in the following ways:

  • They will have a well-grounded understanding of mutually illuminating areas of knowledge in English;
  • They will have a set of sophisticated, flexible, critically needed verbal and written communication skills, particularly those necessary for successfully engaging a digitized, interconnected world;
  • They will have a mind-set that enables them to confidently and critically engage information, assess it comprehensively, and create substantive, well-supported responses in a wide range of situations.

     This approach reflects the realization that Kurdistan needs citizens with these skills and qualities. The ineffectiveness of the existing programmes offered by the majority of the universities here is a well-recognized deficiency, and a similar approach is only destined to repeat failure. Universities invest vast resources in an English degree and yet consistently graduate students with a deficient command of English, an inability to produce meaningful discourse in English, and a lack of related soft skills required to enter the workforce. The UKH’s English programme is set to deliver a superior outcome and provide graduates better prepared to contribute effectively to Kurdistan and the larger world.

     Overall, the B.A. in English at UKH is structured in a way that covers the principal areas of English as a discipline and as set by the British Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), but also in response to the peculiarity of the local market in Kurdistan. This rationale for this approach is also due to the realization that to be competitive in the modern job market, individuals need to have acquired courses and materials that make them flexible and independen

Assessment

     Since this programme aims at developing a set of unique skills which will include transferrable skills and applicable across a wide range of domains, all the programme’s modules incorporate a number of testing strategies and techniques to ensure the acquisition of these skills. Students will be assessed through both integrative (such as essays, presentations, participation, debates, reports, group activities, projects, and etc.) and formal written and oral examination methods (regular exams and tests).
