BA in Politics and International Relations
From its inception in 2006, the Governing Board of UKH identified the need for well-qualified graduates in Politics and International Relations who would be capable of contributing to and leading the development of the Kurdistan region.
The BSc programme in Politics and International Relations was designed to meet these needs with high international standards but with a local vision. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to develop them as critical thinkers capable of playing a key role in the Kurdistan region and beyond.
The Department of Politics and International Relations is committed to excellence in teaching and research. We are actively contributing to UKH's aspiration to become a centre of excellence in research and scholarship that enjoys international esteem, whilst meeting the needs of society as a whole and improving the quality of life in the Kurdistan region.
The BA degree in Politics and International Relations would make you very attractive to employers in a number of professional fields: politics, diplomacy, civil service, journalism, international business and academia. The academic staff of the Department of Politics and International Relations have degrees from internationally recognized universities.
BA holders from Department of Politics and International Relations at UKH have been admitted to post-graduate programs in prestigious universities such as Oxford University and King's College London. The Department of Politics and International Relations has been offering its successful BSc students the chance to participate in the student exchange program with Science Po in France since 2013. The program is offered every Fall semester based on merit.
The BA in Politics and International Relations is a 4-year integrated programme, which is comprehensive and incorporates five major components in the field: comparative politics, political sociology, international relations, political economy and political theory.
Some of the modules the department offers include: International Relations, Comparative Politics, Political Theory, Political Sociology, Politics of the Middle East, Research Methods, National System of Political Economy, Conflict Resolution, International Organisations, Western Political Thought, Public Policy, Conflict & Peace Building, and State, Market & Society.
The Politics and International Relations programme is designed to give students the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the major theoretical, conceptual and methodological issues associated with the study of Politics and International Relations; both at the national and international levels, it also equip students with appropriate tools of analysis to tackle issues and problems related to politics and international relations and build capacities to undertake subsequent academic study, create a learning environment that is receptive to the needs and views of students and encourages them to achieve their full potential, acquire the skills in developing and executing projects of relevance to a range of occupations in the fields of politics, policy making and international relations and improve the quality of public life in Iraqi Kurdistan by producing critical but constructive thinkers.
The structure of the programme has been created with specific progression in mind and the assessment methods are designed both to reflect and support this aim. Students are assessed via a wide range of methods that include essays, reports, exams, case studies, policy briefs, group activities, presentations, and a final thesis.
Admission requirements are:
- Secondary school certificate, attained within the last five years and with a general high school score of 60% and above.
- School Entrance Test (Consists of general knowledge questions)
- Minimum English Language requirement is 45 in PTE, 5.5 in IELTS or 64 in ibt-TOEFL.
Applicants dismissed for any reason from any university, school or college will not be considered.
