Appointment of Mr. Bill Rammell as UKH President

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Bill Rammell as the new President of University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH). He is a highly experienced university leader and former senior government minister from the United Kingdom. For eight years, he was Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire, where he drove the expansion of home and international partnerships, achieved significant improvement in research ranking and quality ratings, and significantly expanded student numbers. Prior to that, Bill was Deputy Vice Chancellor at Plymouth University with lead responsibility for Internationalisation and the Student Experience.

Mr. Rammell also served as an influential minister in the U.K. government for eight years. He was Minister of State at the Foreign Office, with responsibility for the Middle East including relations with Kurdistan. He also served as Minister of State for Education, with responsibility for Further and Higher Education, including the Prime Minister’s Initiative for the Globalisation of Higher Education, and Minister of State for Defence.

Mr. Rammell will bring a wealth of significant experience and reach to UKH, leading its mission to promote international education, to build partnerships with businesses to give enterprises in Kurdistan a competitive edge, to transform our community and society through innovation and the collaborative pursuit of knowledge, and to actively grow the University’s research capacity, student numbers, student satisfaction, and international partnerships.

On his new role as UKH President, Mr. Ramell said “I am hugely excited to be taking the office as President of UKH. It is a superb university and I want to use my leadership skills and experience to lead the team in further enhancing and improving UKH. Decades of international isolation feed a strong appetite for connecting Kurdistan to the world, making friends, learning lessons, deepening democracy, and modernizing the economy. Universities are a key means of doing this. I very much want UKH to be a university at the heart of intellectual, business and political life in Kurdistan. My key aims are to enhance the student experience and promote student employability, and for UKH to be in the vanguard of fresh thinking, social cohesion, and joining global debates about post-Covid economic and social reconstruction with reduced reliance on oil revenues and state employment.”

“I also very much want to grow the range of courses delivered at UKH, particularly in STEM and nursing. And grow international student numbers. Kurdistan should be proud that its instinct on winning freedom from genocide after 1991 was to embark on a democratic path with better higher education. UKH will work with universities across the world but I also and naturally hope, as a former British Higher Education and Middle East Minister as well as a former British university leader, that there will be a special relationship with the U.K. universities as well as many others. I am hugely looking forward to starting work in August,” he added.

Mr. Bill Rammell will take office as President on the 8th of August 2021.
