Dr. Adrian Coad's seminar is about:
Involving the international private sector in service provision
Since the 1980s the World Bank, the IMF, other development agencies and some national governments have been vigorously promoting private sector participation as a way of increasing the efficiency and coverage of public services, including electricity supply, landline telephone systems, water supply and sanitation services. This talk is based on observations of cases in which contractors were engaged to provide water and solid waste management services, mainly in Egypt. The presentation will comment on the extent to which the expected benefits of the participation of the international private sector were realised, and discuss some of the challenges that arose.
