Experiences and expertise from one of the oldest parliaments in the world were shared with advisers to one of the newest by trainers from the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH). The workshop was organised by the European Technology and Training Centre (ETTC) and funded by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. It took place on 14/15 December.
Advisers at the 29-year-old Kurdistan Parliament participated in lectures and training sessions led by the former British MP and Minister, Bill Rammell, who is now the President of the UKH.
Bill Rammell opened with a lecture titled “What MPs Need?”, in which he gave an overview on his personal experience as a member for 13 years of the UK Parliament. He discussed the different areas in which advisors play a key role in supporting parliamentary members to deliver the best services to the public.
UKH Director of Policy Gary Kent’s lecture on “What Parliamentary Researchers Do” and a lecture on comparative progress in parliamentary democracy in Kurdistan and Iraq, were delivered by UKH Dean of Social Sciences, Dr. Bayar Mustafa.
On the second of the event, UKH President Bill Rammell held a special Q&A session to give further explanations and comparisons of how parliaments and their researchers operate in the UK and the Kurdistan Region. This was followed by a lecture on media handling and social media delivered by Karokh N. Othman, UKH Director of Public Relations, Media and Communication.
At the end of the event, the German Acting Consul General in Erbil, Sven Mossler, UKH President, Bill Rammell, Head of the Divan of the Parliament Ardalan Mohamed, and the ETTC Chief Executive Officer, Jihad Zero distributed certificates of participation to attendees.
